The Deduction Method

Is the Peace Corps staff marvelous, or what? After completely digesting the Volunteer Handbook, I immediately recognized the need for approval of this blog. I received a very kind response almost immediately (next business day), which even included some tips and a few observations about my ludicrous packing list. Yes, I realize it’s crazy; but how kind of the PC staff to offer great suggestions. And chances are the flat iron won’t be anywhere near my suitcases (which are all soft-sided, naturally). But, hey, I keep dreaming. So my new plan of attack, when the packing actually commences in a couple of weeks: pack it; then lift it; remove it. Deduct, and repeat this process.

The best packing tip I’ve heard (probably from some PC publication or RPCV’s advice): pack it all and tote it around your neighborhood looking like an idiot. If you can carry it all, fine. But be certain to recognize that the stares about your bizarre behavior may be comparable to those forthcoming from your host country. Is she about to topple over? Who would try to tote so much luggage? Is that a flat iron we see protruding from that bag? We can only speculate.
